News and Updates (It's been a while)
Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well!
It has been more than a while since I made a devlog and I am sure many of you are confused as why nothing new has been announced. Well to be franc, there's been a bit of commotion here and there just was no time for me to work on anything that involves personal projects, but now things have started to calm down and I am once again able to start the engines of game development! Although, many things seem to have changed since the last update, to name one, the whole downfall of Unity. So today I am going to talk a bit about the future of Darkest Descent, as it was developed on the said engine.
-The Unity Debacle-
Some of you might have heard the news that Unity has decided to introduce a tax for each install per user... and then after some backlash they decide to revert the changes. This leaves me with one option, as Unity can't be trusted for the future of any developed games, to move engines!
I've been eyeing Godot as of recently. An engine made by the community, for the community and to be fair it looks like it's an exact match for the type of games that I want to develop in the future.
So, I will start by learning the fundamentals and all the jazz, then proceed to make the main game. This means it will take a little bit more time than normal to get stuff done, but I am certain this will be the best move.
-Game Change-
For a while, even back when I was still able to work on the game, I was a little displeased with the whole 2D perspective of the game, as I am a low poly enthusiast, but this doesn't mean I didn't like it, just that it wasn't my cup of coffee to put it bluntly, so I've decided to make a shift in the plans and with the whole ability to start anew, I will be making Darkest Descent in the 3D low poly aspect with pixelated graphics, something that Godot is able to do on it's own with a bit of magic.
With this I also want to change the scenario of the game a little bit, as well as some core mechanics of the game. First and foremost, I want to change the combat system from the turn based style, to more idle action based combat, something based on games like Vampire Survivors or Halls of Torment, as I have been extensively drawn in by those titles. Fear not tho, the RPG mechanic of the game will stay, as I believe that being able to craft your own adventure is a must for the game.
-Exposure?-
Until now, updated, posts, changes and everything were mainly advertised on my personal Twitter (now X) account. Mainly I thought this was a good idea, but I feel like with the amount of information shared or posted there, important posts about the game it's self are being lost, so I have decided to make a standalone page for the game, you can find it HERE. Any follows, reposts and shoutouts are appreciated!
-The Future!-
I don't yet know how things will progress from here on out, but what I know is that there will definitely be updates coming, devlogs and more to let you guys know what's happening and how everything progresses, all I ask for is for patience, as I am slow on news posts.
I will also be looking into expanding the team for this project, as it stands now, as a solo dev it takes a lot of time for me to do everything, work on models, code, shaders, level design, quests design etc. So I will be looking for people that are willing to help with the project.
To tell the truth this will be a hard task as there is no actual budget for the game, so anyone who comes on board has to be ok with waiting until the game it's self is released and starts making profit for them to get payed in return for the work... which I'm sure not many are willing to accept. But if any of you, great supporters, who read the devlogs know or you yourself are willing to tune in on this, you can always contact me on my business email: nanosnaker.vt@gmail.com
This is it for now, thanks for taking the time to read and Full Steam Ahead for the things to come!
